Move list from one site to another sharepoint 2010

This is the most common requirement in SharePoint in which we have to move any list/library:
§  From one site collection to another
§  From top level site to subsite
§  From one web application to another
I will try to best to explain all the steps in detailed manner/user friendly/correct keywords/exact explanation.
Here are the details:
Before we start, let’s note down some quotes as an example that I will use in the following steps: Source site: Site A, Destination site: Site B
§  Open the SharePoint site A on which the list is present
§  Click on the list that you wants to move
§  Settings
§  List settings
§  Permissions and Management
§  Save Document Library as Template/Save List as Template
§  It will provide you the window on which you need to type the template name
§  If you wants a data then please select the appropriate check box
§  Click OK
§  It will give you the successful message, on the same page, you can see the gallery option where it’s actually saved the template
§  Once you reach the galleries, click on the template that we have just saved
§  It will give you a option to save the template to your desktop
§  Open the Destination SharePoint site i.e. Site B
§  Site actions
§  Site settings
§  Galleries
§  List Templates
§  Upload
§  Browse the template that we have saved in the above mentioned steps
§  Select it and upload (80% done J)
§  Now click on Create option (http://site_name/_layouts/create.aspx )
§  You can see the list now under create option
§  Click on it, provide an appropriate name as per your requirements and
§  Click OK (100% completed)
If you have any queries/questions regarding the above mentioned information then please let me know. I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issues J J
Thank you.

  2. HI - will this transfer the permissions for each folder/document as well?

    ReplyDelete
  3. NO, as the site collection is different so thats why it will not transfer any existing permissions.

Let me know in case of any further queries/questions, Thank you

  5. I'm trying to move a calendar from a secure site collection to an anonymous site collection. When I follow the steps above, I am able to get the calendar to the anonymous site, but it prompts for credentials when I select the calendar using "anonymous" account. Additionally, when signed in using an non-admin account no items show. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Firstly you can check what kind of permissions has been set for that calendar ? ( i.e. inheriting from the parent/unique)

Also, make sure that the SharePoint site is already added in the trusted site location of your IE and option of ‘automatic logon with current username and password’ is set

As we are using anonymous account then the SharePoint site has to open in READ ONLY mode. If you are trying to modify/change anything then it will prompts for credentials (i.e. username and password)

Please let me know in case of any further queries, Thanks for your patience

  7. Tried this and it works great. I noticed that fields that have a connection to another list (which was not yet moved) are left blank after completion of all steps.

  12. Hello Lisa,

first of all-Thanks for your patience.

    here are the details:

    two conditions:
    1. Transferring list to different subsite within the site collection
    2. Traferring list to compltely different site collection

If i consider the first condition then it can be done by using content and structure option which is present on the site settings page
    Here are the steps:
    1. open the site collection
    2. site actions
    3. site settings
    4. content and structure
    5. select the list from the left hand side-> it will display the number of list items in the right side pane
    6. from the top
    7. select copy ( please do not select 'MOVE')
    8. it will give u a prompt to select the destination where you need to transfer the list items
    9. thats it-> click OK and Done

if i consider the second option now then take the backup of the site collection/subsite and restore it on to that destination

but-there are certain restrictions here for this option, depends on what backup you are taking as i dont know about it, as its a site collection/subsite

let me know in case of any further queries. I would be more than happy to help you as well as answer your queries. Thank you once again

  13. Amol, I have the same problem as Lisa, and the list is in a different site collection.

How do I take a backup of the site collection and restore it in the new site? Is it possible to take a backup of a list instead of the whole site collection?

FYI the list contains a data mix of text, names and images.

    ReplyDelete
  14. if you are using SP2010 then yes, its possible.

I have already published an article on this: http://sharepointknowledgebase.blogspot.in/2012/06/backup-restore-in-sharepoint-2010.html

Please check and let me know your thoughts on this. thank you.

  15. Thank you for the quick reply and the post was really helpful. But it only shows how to backup subsites/lists but not how to restore them. Where can I find the post about restoring it in a different site?

  22. Be careful with online stores asking for too much information.
You only need to provide a store with your name, address and payment information.
You should never give your social security number or driver's licence number to an online store.
Choose another store if you are prompted for personal information when ordering a product.
