The list cannot be displayed in DataSheet view – SharePoint 2010

One of my team mate working on the server where windows server 2008 R2 was installed, he tried switching the view from standard to datasheet and he got the following error:

The list cannot be displayed in DataSheet view for one or more of the following reasons:
- A datasheet component compatible with Miicrosoft Sharepoint Foundation is not installed.
- Your web browser does not support ActiveX controls
- A component is not properly configured for 32- or 64-bit support.

If you are facing the above mentioned error message then I would request you to check the installed office version first.

If you have any confusion as how to check the version then please refer the following link: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24259/beginner-discover-if-youre-running-the-32-or-64-bit-version-of-office-2010/

Why we are checking the office version? Is it necessary?

Yes, it’s very necessary to know the office version we are using whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit.

Microsoft strongly recommends the use of 32-bit (x86) versions of Office 2010, Project 2010, and Visio 2010 applications as the default option for all platforms.

Resolution:
Make sure you use 32 bit version of office.

FAQ: can we install 32 bit office on 64 bit OS? – Yes, absolutely no probs.

Once you install the 32 bit office in such problematic scenarios then I am pretty sure that your issue will be resolved. Thank you.

In case of any issues/queries then please feel free to contact, I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issues.

Product applies to:

SharePoint Server 2010

SharePoint Foundation 2010

  3. Hey
I have two users both have 64 bit OS Win 7, 32 bit Office and both 32/64 bit IE and still they keep getting this error.
I asked the users to install the Office 2007 System driver and the issues still exists.
I checked the addons that are installed on their system and they seems to be working just fine. Any idea why this might be happening?

    Thank you.

    1. Are they having multiple office versions? If that's the case then please keep only one version which is compatible with the version of SharePoint they are using. I mean if it is SP2007 then they should Office 2007. If its SP2010 then it should be office 2010. make sure they use 32-bit only as 64 bit has lot of issues.

    3. What about IE? which version of IE they are using?

Is this functionality ever worked for them? If Yes then did they made any change on their machine recently?

If they try to replicate the same process from some other machine then what happened? Do they face the same error message?

      whats long the URL is?

      Let me know your thoughts.

  4. One has both versions of IE 32 and 64 bit, the other has 64 bit version
The functionality worked till the time they got new laptops with the 64 bit OS 32 bit office and mix version of IE.
The same functionality works fine for me and also for them when they use a different machine. I will work with them to get more and detailed info on the hardware and software tomorrow and can give you more details on the behavior.

    1. Sure no problem. will wait for the same.

Additionally do some more testing like -

-Is this happening only for one list? check the other lists as well.
-Check the document library also->export to spreadsheet functionality.

Test this scenarios in different versions and check which one is working correctly.

      Thanks
